Vengeance Arrives in 2012

NFL and college-level football players will soon have the opportunity to face their foes head-on with Vengeance – the newest and most technologically-advanced helmet released by Schutt Sports.

The new helmet includes four new impact-absorbing features:

1. Fourth Generation patented TPU Cushioning. Dual Density TPU will improve absorption on high-level impacts, as well as low-level impacts.
“TPU Cushioning is already proven to absorb more high-level impact in game-like conditions than traditional foam padding,” Glenn Beckmann, director of marketing communications for Schutt Sports, said. “Our new Dual Density TPU is designed to also meet and better absorb those lower level impacts, which have been shown to potentially have a cumulative, negative effect on the brain, leading to progressive degenerative diseases.”

2. Patented Back-Shelf Design. The Vengeance will be the first football helmet released with Schutt’s patented back-shelf design – a shelf built into the back of the helmet intended to increase the strength and protective properties of the helmet. “This is a great improvement for the many times players fall backwards and hit their heads on the ground,” Beckmann said.

3. Re-designed Air Liner. The Vengeance also will include a re-designed air liner that, for the first time, is made from TPU and adds another layer of impact absorption to the helmet’s performance.

4. Re-designed Faceguards. The Vengeance will feature a completely re-designed set of faceguards, made exclusively for the new helmet. These new faceguards are made to increase impact absorption of the helmet on direct frontal impacts.

“There is nothing like this helmet on the market,” Beckmann explained. “Between the new Dual Density TPU, back-shelf design, air liner and faceguards, the Vengeance will be the best helmet we’ve ever made to address both high-level and low-level impacts and hits.”

Starting in January, all high schools must conform to the new BBCOR baseball bat regulations. Here are some basic facts on what BBCOR is and what it means for your game.

On January 1, 2012, all baseball bats used in NFHS play must pass the new BBCOR Bat Standard. The -3 weight limit, 2 5/8″ barrel and MOI (moment-of-inertia) minimum limits will remain unchanged.
BBCOR stands for “bat – ball coefficient of restitution,” which measures how efficient the ball rebounds off the bat taking into account the properties of the bat and the ball. This new bat standard replaces the previous BESR standard and is designed to achieve wood-like performance in non-wood bats.
There will be no opportunity for “grandfathering” of old BESR bats.
The BBCOR limit (0.50) is equivalent to slightly higher than the best-performing wood bats. Most of the wood bats tested in the mid .480s on the BBCOR. A few of the highest-performing wood bats tested in the low .490s. The sweet spot on the non-wood bats will be larger than wood bats.
The requirements to pass BBCOR will make a typical aluminum bat MOI feel like using a 1″ longer bat (but at the same length). For alloy bats to pass the BBCOR, the barrel walls must be thickened. A thicker wall will make a bat swing heavier. Composite bats will feel lighter because there are other ways to control performance than just by thickening the wall. Composite bats will also have a larger sweet spot.
